Q. Can you please explain the basics for making loose leaf tea?
A. Loose leaf tea is superior in quality and, for real tea lovers, it is a treat to prepare. You will need a teapot and the basic steps are:
- Boil the best water you have using a kettle.
- Use the water to warm your vessel(s) and cups.
- Place the appropriate amount of leaves inside your teapot.
- Pour your water over the leaves.
- Allow to steep for designated time - varying by tea and amount of leaves the steeping time ranges from 30 seconds to five minutes.
- Pour all of your tea out at the same time to stop the flavors from being released.
- Enjoy your tea.
Q. Do you sell teabags?
A. While teabags can sometimes be convenient, it is not what Teas of Green is about. No matter how high of a quality teabag you can find or make, it puts the real emphasis on convenience and not on quality. This ultimately means you are not slowing down to focus on all the characteristics of tea and you are probably not really enjoying the process of making the tea either. Maybe we are crazy but that is a different message than what we want to promote.
Q. Does green and oolong tea have more or less caffeine than coffee?
A. Not an easy question. In general, green tea is considered to have the least amount of caffeine of all teas and certainly less than coffee. It depends, however, a great deal on how you make your tea and how you like it.
For specifics, the average cup of green tea is said to have 6-30mg of caffeine whereas black teas have 20-90mg (with oolongs somewhere in the middle) and coffee 60-160mg, all depending on the strength of the beverage.
If you are concerned about the caffeine in tea, you can rinse the leaves once with hot water - using the same temperature you would normally use for whichever green tea you are preparing (less than boiling) - and 90% of all caffeine is said to be removed.
If your doctor told you not to have caffeine, you should probably avoid all teas but if you are just curious, our view is that caffeine is not inherently bad for you. The overall health benefits and enjoyment of quality tea overshadow any small negative there is to consuming caffeine.
Q. Do you offer free samples?
A. Yes, but only with an order. We do everything we can to keep the price of our tea competitive considering the quality. If you let us know what you would like to taste with your order, we would be happy to provide you with one or two samples.
