Jasmine Green Tea

Jasmine green tea is prepared by infusing fresh green tea leaves with jasmine blossoms. It normally has a very mild natural caffeine content. Some jasmine green teas include real jasmine flowers in the tea leaves for use in making the tea. Others simply use only the blossoms to flavor the leaves and discard the flowers prior to packaging. Still others may include both the flower and the tea leaf in their jasmine green tea recipes. There are several different ways to prepare jasmine green tea that vary according to how you would like to drink it. In some cases, when you steep your tea, you simply add boiling water and let the tea steep for about five minutes. In other cases, you allow the tea to steep longer and then simply add ice and pour over it as you would any other cup of tea. In addition to being a popular weight loss aid, jasmine green tea has been shown in scientific research to have some antioxidant activity. This activity has been linked with weight loss in both humans and laboratory animals. Some of the findings reported in scientific journals have indicated that the antioxidant catechins (which include polyphenols) might be able to reduce body mass index by as much as five pounds after just a few weeks of continuous use. These results were very promising and led to further research into the benefits of jasmine green tea in weight loss and health improvement. However, more recent studies have been less positive in their findings. One of the most common uses for jasmine green tea in modern times has been in the field of herbal medicine. Because the tea is rich in antioxidants, it has been used in some formulations as a natural remedy for diabetes and other digestive problems. In addition, high levels of the antioxidant polyphenols have been linked with a reduction in inflammation and a lowering of the blood pressure. Because the active ingredients have anti-bacterial and anti-viral activity, they also have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system, contributing to improved immune health. While there are many positive findings reported in scientific journals and on industry websites, there is also a darker side to the story. In some cases, jasmine tea does appear to have negative health consequences, at least when it is consumed in large quantities. The problem appears to be related to the concentration of tea antioxidants and the delicate nature of the jasmine tea flower. Jasmine green tea has a very delicate floral nature. When high levels of the antioxidant catechins are ingested, it is not possible for the body to completely excrete them from the system. Ingestion leads to "taste-buds", which are typically bitter in taste, but can lead to problems such as stomach upset, gas, cramps, bloating, diarrhea, and excessive burping, among other symptoms. Tolerable levels of jasmine green tea flowers may be reached if the leaves are steamed before consumption. Jasmine tea leaves can also be prepared by steaming them in a pan over a low heat, instead of heating them to boiling point. This preparation permits the catechins to be carried much further down the digestive tract and to be more effective. However, anyone who is pregnant or nursing should exercise caution when using this tea, as it may cause uterine contractions. It is not known whether the jasmine green tea flowers in this preparation have any effect on the fetus' development, or whether it will prevent implantation in women. A very interesting phenomenon has been documented in Asia, whereby jasmine green tea leaves are crushed and drunk with water. It is said that this beverage has great healing power due to the caffeine content; although no scientific study has supported this claim. Caffeine has been shown to reduce fatigue in human beings, so this would be an obvious source of relief for those suffering from aching muscles. However, this benefit has not yet been proven in any scientific manner. There are many different types of jasmine green teas available on the market today. The variety that is most used in traditional jasmine flavorings is Jasmine Essential Oil or Jasmine Flower Oil. Jasmine flower oil is extracted from the petals and seeds of the Jasmine Arundinacea plant, a member of the mint family, Labiatae alba. This tea is considered superior to juniper berries in culinary and aromatherapy applications, and is also a traditional medicine of India. It has a very sweet, warm, and inviting flavor, so you don't want to pass it up!
